Leander Paes is known as one of India’s most successful tennis playesrs. He was born on June 17, 1973 in Kolkata and comes from a distinguished sporting background.His father played hockey team and his mother, a basketball player, was captain of the Indian basketball team. At the age of 12 Paes enrolled at the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy in Madras.Five years later, he won the Wimbledon Junior titli and climbed to the November 1 spot in world Junior ranking.
At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Paes and his partner, Ramesh Krishnan reached the quarter finals of the doubles event, but eventually lost. At the 1996 Olympics, Paes won the Bronze medal, becoming the first Indian in over four decades to win an individual Plympic medal. 1996 was also the same year that he paired-up with Mahesh Bhupathi.This proved to be a successful partnership as the pair grew stronger and eventually became the first Indians to reach the finals a grand slam event. The same year, paes ranked Number 1 in world doubles ranking. In 2003, Leander Paes was diagnosed with a parasitic brain infection. However, he resumed plying the next year with Mahesh Bhpati. He has received a number of awards including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1996 and the Padma Shri title in 2001.
