BORN Frances Ethel Gumm, Judy Garland is one of Hollywood’s most loved actors. Best known for her role in The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland started her career in show business at the age of two. As a young performer, the roles that brought her attention were the ones she played opposite Mickey Rooney, such as Thoroughbreds Don’t Cry and Love Finds Andy Hardy.

At the age of 16, in 1939, she starred as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, a movie that is loved to this day. The movie, along with Babes in Arms, earned her an Academy Juvenile Award at the 1940 Academy Awards. After this, Judy Garland’s image of a child star was altered as she took on grown up roles in movies such as Strike Up the Band and Little Nellie Kelly. Garland was signed by MGM Studios and the success of these movies made her one of MGM’s top earners. Judy Garland died in 1969 at th age of 47. She was a performer for 45 of her 47 years.
