Dr.Sukumar Azhikode an Indian writer , critic and orator, acknowledged for his contributions to Malayalam language and insights on Indian philosophy passed away on January 24, 2012. he was a scholar in Sanskrit , Malayalam  and English. He started his career as a school teacher ad then went on to become a professor, principal and later pro vice-chancellor of Calicut University from where he retried in 1986. In 2007, Dr. Azhikode had refused to accept the  Padma Shri stating that such honours were against the constitution which treated all citizens as equals. His famous work is “ Tatvanasi’ which won several awards, including the national and state Sahitya Akademi award. Dr. Azhikode served as chairman of the National Book Trust from 1993 to 1996.
